The public is invited to celebrate the groundbreaking for Habitat for Humanity homes #140 and #141 this Saturday, March 23.

This first groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at 408 East 8th Street, Davenport, and the second will take place shortly after at 11 a.m. at 1436 West 8th Street, Davenport.

These two home build projects, plus one more home build currently in progress at 2123 W. 6th St., Davenport, are being supported, in whole or in part, by federal funding to the state of Iowa by the American Rescue Plan Act. Each home build has received $172,724 in ARPA funds for its construction.

This was a unique opportunity provided to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the state of Iowa, thanks to the work of Habitat of Iowa, the state support organization for local affiliates, according to a Thursday release from Habitat Quad Cities.

“What a gift for the Quad Cities,” Habitat executive director Tom Fisher-King said Thursday, noting his nonprofit has never received federal funding like this. “We’re not going to be able to have funds like this ever again.”

Habitat QC has a total of six home builds under way in Davenport as well as one home renovation that is nearing completion. The organization hopes to break ground on five additional home builds later this year, the release said.

Habitat’s affordable homeownership program is a long-term solution to the current affordable housing crisis. Habitat partner families must complete a minimum of 250 volunteer hours of sweat equity and attend mandatory homeownership preparation classes with the support of a volunteer mentor. When their home build is finished, partner families purchase the home from Habitat with affordable monthly payments on a zero-interest mortgage.
